Speeding driver charged after striking, killing electric scooter rider, officials say - nj.com

A speeding driver has been charged with vehicular homicide after striking and killing a woman crossing a Newark intersection on an electric scooter last week.

Paulo A. Gomes, Jr. hit the 35-year-old woman when he drove through a red light at about 1:10 p.m. Thursday, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said Tuesday.

The scooter rider — Newark resident Marilyn Belkis Reyes Borja — was starting to cross north to Blanchard Street at the Y-intersection with Ferry Street and Raymond Boulevard when Gomes’ eastbound Dodge Charger hit her.

Gomes, 36, of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania and a passenger — his 15-year-old son — were not hurt.

Video surveillance footage shows Gomes’ car going through a red light with other traffic stopped at the intersection, the prosecutor’s office said.

Gomes remains held in the Essex County jail, according to jail records. Attorney information wasn’t immediately available.

Reyes Borja will be buried in her native Honduras, according to a GoFundMe.com raising money for funeral expenses.
